Nothing is Insignificant

How many 20 years do we have?
1st 20 years studying..
2nd 20 years working..

That's life's mathematics for adults.
Kids grow even faster, month by month.

.. their shoes no longer fit after a few months
.. they have grown bulkier, Daddy struggle to carry 12kg Xin with one hand !
.. no more diapers, changing of milk formula
.. they do not need bodyguard to bring them toilet in the night anymore
.. school bag suddenly so heavy 15kg (Primary school)
You get the idea...

~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
When we are working, or busy with projects, do we sometimes pause for a few seconds, and ponder, imagine what are the kids doing at home or school? Daddy sometimes remind Mummy to take more photos of their activities.
Activities..
Waiting for school bus, their favourite corner at playground, Xin learning hallelujah, and Yi singing in Mandarin ! Daddy did not know our kids were making some hamsters FAT !
It make you realised time flies. Kids grow up overnight.
Starting from today, Daddy and Mummy will maintain an album..to keep all the insignificant photos :p
If you have been missing some kids activities recently, what are you doing about it?
Some of us can always make another baby, relive the insomia stages again,
but SengkangBabies confirm stop at four haha.
Memories, are not only made of milestones, memories are only complete when we have all the tiny insignificant moments. As Chinese would say "酸甜苦辣" (sour sweet bitter spicy).
We will add more insignificant photos along the way.. to remind us that we should not take anything for granted. Click to unlock our album.
Wei, where are you going next?
ps.. if this is the first time you are visiting Sengkang's Babies, read our introduction page :)
Just hear them croon in the video clip above.
Definitely not your average Grandpa and Grandma :0
Come May, Young@Heart will be in Singapore as part of "Singapore Arts Festival".
When SMRT train breaks down..
Everyone in Singapore know about the SMRT breakdowns over the weekend.
This seems to be inconceivable in Singapore, where everything runs like clockwork.
Daddy is actually happy that small "disasters" strike us every now and then.
Floods at Orchard road, and trains breakdown.
It proofs that Singapore is not perfect, and nobody should take our basic infrastructure for granted. Incidence will always pop up, but it is how we response, that demonstrates our resolution.
**Sidetrack a bit**
Singapore's children have grown up in a dream world, where they “expect and demand” a roof over their heads, McDonald Big breakfasts are a given, and maids are meant to serve them. When things do not work, they start whining :p
Can we blame so many people for condemning the train breakdowns?
Daddy does not blame SMRT for the breakdown, but the follow-up fiasco leaves much to be desired.
The messy coordination and confusing information left countless commuters fuming.
We are left wondering whether there was any SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) in the first place.
Passengers were stuck in cabin for nearly one hour, with no light and minimum ventilation,
wondering whether HELP will come in minutes or in hours
Video : Exiting the MRT emergency door under brighter circumstances
Some points to ponder from this Train episode :
- What happens if there was a bomb? How do we self evacuate ?
- When faced with adversity, are we able to make a stand for ourselves, and help our families? Or do we still rely on Government for solution?
- On the other hand, how many of us take our fire-drills seriously? Daddy is one of those who take the lift earlier,
so he can avoid taking the stairs !
- install the FlashLight App for your Smartphone
- maybe more families can sign-up for a tour of MRT depot. We visited Sengkang depot last year.
Get familiar with Exits, walking on tracks etc.
- Daddy make a mental note to remind his kids to avoid "Transport Minister" role in future (if they wish to be politician) keke
~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~

Count our blessings, Singapore is lucky that no one was injured in this incidence.
Let everybody learn and grow from this episode.

We should learn to look at things from a bigger perspective. People are dying in the region from flooding, hunger, and we are only complaining about train breakdowns.

Responsible Advertising - Ford's agent does not get it

Recently, this poster in Orchard is making waves online, and parents are worried that the low-rise jeans with revealing brief might be taboo for kids.

Daddy though it is quite harmless, and god knows what kids can download from Internet nowadays !
(porn, violence etc)

On the other hand, Ford's agent Regent motor placed an advert for S-Max on Sat. We know from the specifications that it is a powerful car, but Daddy was disappointed at the language used.

"Ashamed", "Boring", "Proud" are used to describe how kids should perceive other car makes.

Do we really want our kids to feel ashamed, because they might be driving a car more humble than S-Max? What about the bread and butter Hondas and Toyotas?

It would be sad, when our kids grow up with materialistic views.
In schools, we overhear stories of kids who compare their material wealths.
Some parents living in upmarket condos even tell their kids not to visit filthy HDBs !
(I cannot confirm second point)

By all means, if you wish to push your sales, use gimmicks, and even controversial ads,
but leave "parenting" out of the picture.

S-Max, you might be cool with good performance and features,
but your "S-Max takes on Cool Parenting" tag sucks :(

Do let me know whether Daddy is too sensitive, or maybe you have more examples to share?

Breakfast and Nutrition

早餐吃的好, 午餐吃的饱, 晚餐吃的少.

Recently, Daddy participated in a breakfast forum organised by Asiaprwerkz and Nestle. He is curious about how nutrition plays an important part for a growing child, and why breakfast is important for everyone.

Daddy and Mummy got a small confession here, both of us are lazy.
As long as kids can fill their stomachs, we are not fussy with what they eat :p
..and Daddy felt so guilty after the talk keke.

Held at Seb's Bistro Rochestor, the event panel comprise of :
- Ms Gladys Wong (Chief Dietician at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital)
- Ms Annie Chew (President, Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association)
- Mr Lim Soon Hock (Chairman of Centre for Fathering and National Family Council)
- Mr Valerio Nannini (MD Nestle)
- Ms Leonny Atmadja (Blogger Mummy of three)

What did Daddy learn from the breakfast forum ?

- Parents normally "know" why nutrition and breakfast is important for kids, but the challenge is to reinforce this message to the kids.

- Leonny shared with us about her challenges to prepare breakfast and ensure her kids finish breakfast timely.
If kids are late, they have to explain to teachers. This might help kids "manage" their time better :)

- Breakfast defines whether our day starts on a solid footing, we need enough nutrition to get our brain stimulated. Gladys mentioned that some studies indicate that kids who enjoy breakfast will pay more attention and absorb more information during morning lessons.
To reinforce her point, she also mention that Maths should not be first lesson in school, as it requires a lot of attention from kids. If kids happen to skip breakfast, how can we expect them to focus?

- Everything in "moderation". Three glasses of milk contains our daily calcium requirement, but we do not have to literally drink three glasses at one go. This is only an exaggerated example to show moderation in food intake.

- Parents can be creative and enjoy some fun quiz time with kids too.
Gladys recommend parents to user Health Promotion Board (HPB) triangle (above) to ask kids about their dairy food intake patterns. Example, are we having enough sodium, carbo etc, or are we having too much donuts and sweet stuffs !

- when we sleep, our body is recuperating. Energy is used to repair body tissues. Mr Valerio highlighted why it is important to keep ourselves hydrated. Kids might need eight hours to have a good rest.

- if your kids are having strawberry and chocolate milk (which are sweeter than full cream), please rinse their mouth before sleep, otherwise it will lead to cavity issues next time

- Whole grain comprise Vitamins and Fibre, is a wholesome breakfast recommendation. Cereal adds constitution and helps with digestion and bowl movement.

- Interestingly Gladys shared with parents that Soya Bean (豆花) is RICH in calcium, but 豆花水 got no calcium ooops.

Besides nutrition, we also touch on other points of interest :

- Parents' involvement. Parental influence is critical for kids to pick up and cultivate "good" habits from young.

- If parents practice good habits, like sleeping early, eating together as a family, and encouraging healthy breakfast,kids will likely behave likewise.

- Gladys emphasize "routine" a few times to bring home her point.
What children do not See, they do not Miss. Simple but true !
Pei Lin (our coordinator) later highlighted another example of a family without TV. This might be bizarre to today's parents, but the family benefited by becoming more cohesive, as everyone is encouraged to speak and interact with each other !

- parents eat and children see, they perceive what we do (good and bad), and start learning subconsciously. So if we want our kids to enjoy their vegetables, Parents must sometimes "show" kids how they enjoy their Greens :0

早餐吃的好, 午餐吃的饱, 晚餐吃的少.
This is what the older folks will preach, but somehow we parents today forget to reinforce. Daddy will try to make an effort to ensure our kids will have a more nourishing breakfast, and healthier lifestyle..

It has to start with the parents :)

Learning to Ride a Bicycle

It is about time for our kids to ride.

Like swimming, Daddy view biking as a fundamental life skill. Imagine, if our kids cannot swim or ride, how much fun will they be missing !

Step 1.
Mount bike, kids must be able to tip toe on bike.
If bike frame is too short, kid will struggle to peddle.

Step 1a. Get a helmet. Our kids are not as rugged as yesterday's kids, and we parents do not want them to get unnecessary bumps keke

Step 2. Look infront. (Easier than done) Look front again.

Step 3. Peddle ! Kids always forget to peddle due to fear of falling.
Without motion, how can a bike balance?

Step 4. Let kids know it is ok to fall down. It is more important to know why and how they fell. Falling down is part and parcel of learning.

Step 5. Learn how to brake, park and bell along the way.

Learning to ride a bike is like going through our life cycle.
Everybody has to learn from scratch, make mistakes, learn from experience, and make our lives better.
Then go back to Step 1 again
:p

Have Fun, face the pressure, be strong :)

Do pop by our Fanpage for more fun bike photos...

Parenting, from a Daddy's point of view

Recently, Daddy caught up with a few other Daddies (William, Peter, Kelvin, and Vincent) to kiss and tell on our little darling/s. JuliaGabriel and DunBarJones had invited a few chaps to share their kids-raising experiences.

We had Fiona and William from JuliaGabriel, and Janice from DunbarJones joining us, and the theme was :

"Developing Happy and Confident Children -
A Dad's Perspective"

We met up at the Wine Company @ Evans, and Daddy was wondering whether we will stay sober to spill our stories :p

Why Dads? We all agree that more Dads are getting involved in family life, be it taking care of kids, bonding with babies or even studying with teenagers. We see a mindset change from Asia's Daddies. For once, it might be interesting to talk about parenting from a man's point of view.

In case you are wondering, Daddies do not need to be discipline master, and they do not have to show stern face with big cane all day long. Today's kids do not response positively to threats, must use negotiations ...

In summary, we went through some of the following pointers , and we laugh ourselves silly whenever we share common experiences :p

1) How do we manage Jealousy and kids?
Kids are jealous because they feel insecure, they suspect parents are not paying enough attention.
We can try to empower the older ones, let them feel responsible for their younger siblings.
Example, only big brother can have this privilege bla bla bla. Kids would feel trusted, and they know Mummy and Daddy still love them :)

2) Reading stories- who is reading?
There is a lot of difference when kids read, and when they listen to Parents read.
Parent's tones, and our accents can let their little minds wander, and can make a storyline more Dramatic. When kids love reading, they will automatically love to gain more knowledge and become more curious (eg what does the next chapter holds?)
We all know how "Show & Tell" is trying to encourage kids to love reading, and Express themselves :)

3) Language and Communication
Kids are using English as their primary mode of communications, so much so that their second language (Mother tongue) might be neglected.
Our Wen Yi is one good example, every Mandarin-Question got an Answer-in-English !
We just hope this is a passing phase, and we can only try to encourage him to speak more Mandarin.

William shared with us that in some families, Mummy will speak English, and Daddy will speak Mandarin to their kids. From young, Kids are brought up to breathe and speak both languages comfortably (it takes discipline and determination from parents)
To prove his point, William can strike a conversation fluently in English, Hindi, Mandarin, even a few dialects !

4) Kids behaviour (both mischievous and good, either funny or exasperating)
Some kids instinctly know how to wriggle themselves out of trouble. Peter and William shared how their boys will snuggle up and express "apology" like little angels. No matter how angry a parent can be, a kid knows how to melt our heart :p

Daddy shared how the little ones always see and learn, then improvised and perfect their little schemes ! Kids are smart, and sometimes parents are really at their mercy haha.

Got a kid who likes to bite (ouch)? Daddy Vincent shared how he coax his little boy by reading "Teeth is not for biting" :)
And it works !

**above book title image from Amazon**

5) How to manage kids sleeping pattern?
A lot of parents always ask how some kids can sleep early, while others sleep pass midnight? It all boils down to the parent's habits! Parents sleep late, kids sleep late. This challenge is easier to surmount when kids are still young, to cultivate into their habit and routine.

Disclaimer, it does not mean non-social Daddies are not involved Daddies. It just happen that our group tonite are happily embracing social-media and even blog about out baby/toddlers/preschooler daily hiccups .

Daddy is just glad that our generation's Daddies are playing a more active role in parenting. In fact, Fiona ask what could be the "sudden" realisation that Daddies are now more involved? (maybe more working mummies and men to chip in with parenting, Daddies are finding it cool to parent their kids, and even sharing their growing up stories...)

Have you thought about why more Dads are embracing parenthood?

~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Anyway, we enjoy each other's company on that evening, and Daddy would like to take this opportunity to thanks Fiona, William and Janice for hosting us. Till the next meetup, you will definitely hear more gossips from Daddies.
We heard the next meetup might be over Soccer! That would be so cool !
Boys will be boys, and that include the men :p
The kids are eating screw brackets!
**warning** please ensure the little ones are not watching ...
Daddy got a shock earlier, when he saw Boon Yee munching on screw brackets!
The name might be wrong, but we use these brackets for hammering the nail or screws into wall.
Now, why would anybody design some sweets which look like screw or nails for that matter?
For the kids, it is sweet stuff, but for Daddy, his heart stop for a while as he was wondering how kids manage to find Daddy's toolbox!
** Please do not try this at home, kids will not be able to tell the difference between a sweet and the real stuff. Similarly, we need to ensure our kids can differentiate between M&M and panadol capsules !!
(keep the meds out of reach)
Are Singaporean gracious?
Are we kind and courteous, are we gracious?
Daddy think these "traits" are interconnected, and if we only think about ourselves, society will be poorer off, with more selfish souls.
Some might say Singapore's kiasu syndrome is cultivated by "intense competition" since young, studies, then work... Maybe... but if we keep on finding excuses for ourselves, we will not be able to make any breakthrough.
Take the first step, try to be "kind" to someone today. Daddy always believe if you are kind and friendly to people, someone will reciprocate.
It is never too late, get the younger generation back to basics, starting with
"Please" ,"Thank you", and "Welcome".
We do not need the government to start another campaign or propaganda.
For more recommendations, please read our "gracious" post -->
Handling kids, no problems :p
It was not too long ago, when Daddy failed to drive our car out of carpark! Daddy is very confident of his driving skills, but he could not handle the crying baby seated behind !
In 2003, Wen Wei is our first baby, and we became parents overnight :)
He was so small then, fast forward 7 years, he is now 30kg !
Every parent has to start learning about parenting at some point..
There is no user-manual to follow, only instinct and best-practice and advices from fellow parents and grandparents :)
Daddy would like to summarize the kids/effort ratio :
~~~~~~~~~
- with one kid - both parents full attention, we we are still learning - Effort is 100%
- with two kids - parents thought maybe some skills can be recycled, how wrong :p - Effort 150% (kids fighting for attention is no joke)
- with three kids - our No1 can take care of baby now - Effort - 80%
- with four kids - more helping hands - Effort 70%
~~~~~~~~~
Does it sound like more kids make parenting easier? or maybe we parents are already immune to the strenuous tasks ? We are still enjoying bringing our kids outsdoor, but Daddy hesitate when we eat out (difficult to tie down four active kids, and they normally attract too much attention haha)
People see our pictures, read our blog and might assume that our kids are easier to handle. We train them to be independent and responsible from young.
When we ask parents to bring their kids for more outdoor fun, they start imaging kids running in all directions, or playing "hide and seek" in the woods ! This very thought could discourage some first time parents.
Tip - engage the kids, let them know about the plants, the bugs, the sand and they might just pay some attention to you.
One more tip, if u think bringing your toddlers out is challenging, try our tips on public transport first --> http://sengkangbabies.blogspot.com/2010/02/going-overseas-try-sg-public-transport.html
**The more we go out with kids, the more comfortable we become**
Now, if you think active kids are hard to rein in, try getting them to sit still for 5 min (without ipad and iphone). Daddy survived a wedding lunch banquet with two youngest kids. They could have smash the cutlery, play flying darts or saucers? or pull the bridesmaid's long tresses?? Luckily, they did not embarrass Daddy. But Daddy was feeding and entertaining them non-stop :)
We try to handle each challenge positively...if we survive, our handling skills and confidence receives a booster. Next, we can try going further, and perform more task together, as a unit, as a family !
For parents, there is nothing to lose other than feeling embarrassed, if kids misbehave in public. No problem, parenting "First course" is learn to be thick-skin!! Ignore what others are staring, and ignore their judgements.. we are all learning !
If you are a new parent, welcome and congrats, more sleepness night will accompany you, you will lose appetite when your child fall sick, and your wallet might scream at the expensive medications ! Just remember, every parent need to overcome these milestones, before they truely appreciate parenting. Our parents went through the same stuff to raise us up :)
Kids update - his Eye and her Poo
Boy cuts himself accidentally. Doctor suspect maybe pencil lead or paper could have poke his eye. Yi's left eye iris got a faint slash, and it bloodshot his eye.
We were so worried that his eyesight could be affected, but fortunately everything turnout well.
Wow, is our girl really growing up so fast? Teachers are slowly teaching her to do away with diapers. She has to wear her panty over her diaper. What ?? Everyday when we reach home, Xin will patiently show us how to remove and wear her own pants and skirt haha.
However, it was not so funny when Daddy was washing her soiled pants, and one lump of Poo drop off !! Tomorrow must ask which teacher give us "chocolate"!
Kids never cease to keep parents worried or amused!
Mother's Day celebration
For mother's Day our teachers teach us how to make cookies and love-notes for Mummy. So sweet, Mummy almost could not bear to eat the cookies.
Daddy find the wordings too mushy "I love you, 我爱你". Daddy told kids they can use these sugar-coated words to woo their girlfriend next time :p
We went to Rivervale Mall's Korea BBQ Chicken for dinner, to celebrate Mother's Day with Mummy and Nai Nai 奶奶.
Food is so so, and we believe the chicken and beef should be better choice than the fish dishes.
Wen Wei ordered sambal fish, he prefers spicy dishes.
Beef for Mummy, too chewy
Grilled chicken for Daddy.
After Dinner, we decided to take some more photographs.
Who want to try the rides?
Happy Mother's day !
ps.. if you are looking for a cool dining place in Sengkang, we will recommend BrewBaker over BBQ, for better value, and ambiance. BBQ Chicken does not serve free flow sky juice.
