Nikon D5000 or Canon 550, Daddy's new DSLR toy

For entry level DSLR (define as $1500 and below, normally with LCD), the hot model is Canon 550. For Nikon, D90 is always popular
(even though this is 2008 model)
.

Above picture taken from DPReview's side-by-side comparison
- Nikon D5000 is in same group as 500 and 550
- Nikon D90 is in same group as Canon 50d

Sample shots..Natural lighting.. Just set to Auto and snap away

Requirements for Daddy :
1) grip and feel must be comfortable
2) within budget
3) decent shutter speed x4, allows us to snap away

Nice to have
4) pixel size
5) HD movie recording
6) even higher ISO and Shutter settings (a entry level DSLR already offers a lot of experimental modes and dial, to hone your skills)

??

Is this LiveView beneficial?
AutoFocus on LiveViews is notoriously slow.
For sports , and active kids, Viewfinder is still the way to go.

Did not have time to play with composition yet, but Daddy is
already very sastified with output. Children's pictures turn out sharp,
and we can only improve our photo taking techniques :p

$$ (prices are estimated, date 2010 Jun)
~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Nikon D90 - $1500 - This is old model, and D95 rumoured around the corner.
This camera has depreciated over the years.
(Package offers 105mm lens instead of 55mm).
It offers more manual feature for an amatuer to progress.
Nikon D5000 - $1100 - offers almost same specification as D90.
Swivel Lens looks interesting.
Canon 550 - $1400 - Higher price, due to pixel and advance features
Canon 500 - $1200 - Canon 550's predecessor
Lens - did anybody highlight to you that Lens are expensive?
( be it Macro,Wide,Tele, etc )
~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~

** Daddy could not justify the higher price models, so we settled for Nikon D5000.
Hopefully, this platform would allow Daddy to explore and learn the tricks.

Meanwhile, Daddy got to practice more on apetures, shutter and Iso ..
Where are our little models?

disclaimer..above comments are solely Daddy Andy's, and if you feel I am sprouting nonsense, please feel free to correct me. My intention is only to provide an insight on what a new DSLR user can expect.

  3. Well, just to enlighten you, new doesn't mean better in the DSLR's case. In fact, the D90 is an intermediate body while the D5000 is an entry-level body.

    Also, the Nikon's 18-105 is a better performer compared to the D5000's mediocre 18-55.

    Have a great time with the DSLR!

    i only saw colourful Pentax before.
    Otherwise, sony,nikon, olympus and canon all black :p

    These camera makers are missing a important consumer segment haha (female purchasing power is strong )

    ===================================================

    the 18-105 of D90 only outperforms the 18-55 on the telephoto end but in terms of sharpness the 18-105 is very soft at corners not to mention its barrel distortion.

    please remember, the longer the lens barrel the greater the distortion. the shorter, the better. want to know why? physics man, light travels in speed and it bounces. the faster the light reaches the sensor of the camera, the more correct are the lines projected by that light.

    by the way, both D90 and D500 belongs to the same class, the Mid Range Level

  11. kangkongkernitz - sorry miss your comment till today. D5000 is a good base to pick up, then u will appreciate D90's larger viewfinder, and auto-focus builtin :)
